The collection consists of ten letters written by Hugh Weedon Mercer to his daughter, Mrs. H. H. Walker from 1861-1866, concerning family but also the Civil War. Discussed is the defense of Charleston, South Carolina, charges against Mercer by General Carlin, his arrest, imprisonment at Fort Pulaski and Savannah, Georgia, and his release.

Hugh Weedon Mercer, Confederate officer, merchant, and banker, was born on November 27, 1808 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and died in Baden Baden, Germany on June 9, 1877. He graduated from West Point in 1828. He was commissioned a colonel with the Confederate Army when Georgia seceded; was appointed a brigadier general (1861) and commanded the post of Savannah for most of the war.
